From assassin to hero, Cassandra Cain begins the journey that will make her one of Gotham City's most beloved defenders. Cassandra Cain was raised to be a weapon. Trained from childhood to become one of the world's deadliest fighters, she knows how to survive—but not how to live. When Cassandra rejects the future others planned for her, she finds a new purpose under the guidance of Batman and Oracle. Taking up the mantle of Batgirl, she begins a difficult journey of redemption, learning what it means to protect rather than destroy. As she confronts criminals, assassins, and threats throughout Gotham City, Cassandra must also overcome the challenges of building relationships, trusting others, and defining herself beyond her past. Blending high-energy martial arts action with emotional character growth, these stories established Cassandra Cain as one of the defining heroes of the Bat-Family and a fan-favorite legacy character. This volume collects the first chapter of her acclaimed saga from her origin to her first adventures into her solo series. Collects Batgirl #1-19, Batgirl Annual #1, Batman #567 and #569, Ghost/Batgirl #1-4, Young Justice #21, Batman: Gotham Knights #2, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #120, Detective Comics #734, Superboy #85, The Batman Chronicles #18, Azrael: Agent of the Bat #56-57 and #60-61, a story from Batman: Gotham City Secret Files #1, and a page from Young Justice #20.
